Loss of Protein: Most examples of a swollen abdomen in the setting of malnutrition are due to a lack of protein intake. For example, in children in impovershed regions, when you see those pictures of their swollen bellies it is generally because they get no protein in their diets. Interestingly, return of good nutrition, causes this problem to improve or even totally resolve.
