See full answer: Tonsillitis is an infection or inflammation of the tonsils. Strep is a specific bacteria that can cause tonsillitis or pharyngitis (infection of the throat). Mononucleosis is an infection caused by epstein barr virus. All three can present with severe sore throat, fever, and other symptoms. Your doctor can differentiate between them with a combination of physical exam and tests.
