Very different: Both types of diabetes are characterized by high blood glucose levels. Type i diabetes is caused by a failure of the islet cells in the pancreas to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is required to get glucose into the cells. In type ii diabetes, the pancreas produces Insulin but the cells don't use the Insulin in a normal fashion. This is sometimes called Insulin resistance.
