Upper airway issue: It depends if it's on inhalation or exhalation. However, it sounds like an upper airway issue like a floppy soft palate or uvula. These kinds of things could cause sleep apnea which is an upper airway obstruction. These kinds of things would also cause snoring when you sleep.
