See below: Bacteria reproduce at an alarmingly rapid rate. Due to the high rate, the rate or errors in their genetic material is relatively high as well. If a particular mutation gives rise to resistance to the particular antibiotic the patient is taking then that bacteria has a selective advantages and thus flourishes.
