If the doctor suspects a bacteria has begun to infect a person with the flu, antibiotics are added to the treatment. Such issues as ear and sinus infections, or bacterial bronchitis would be a common reason to add them. You don't treat simple flu with antibiotics as they won't help with that.

I agree that influenza is not treated with antibiotics. It is a viral illness. Tamiflu is often effective in reducing the duration of the illness. Watch for signs of worsening cough, fever and dehydration.
