Drainage: Sometimes it is hard to tell but typically an infection will bring a lot of reactive cells and cause pus/drainage. Allergy causes more of a local reaction with redness/pain and irritation. Typically infection will continue after earing is out unless topical antibacterial (alcohol, neosporin) is applied. Allergy may continue for up to one week but does not require more attention if earring out.
