How can i tell if i have allergies or an eye infection?

Itching: Eye allergies are almost always accompanied by itching especially at the nasal fold. Infections usually cause burning or pain with discharge that can sometimes be pus-like. Viral conjunctivitis often has a watery discharge like allergies but there is usually little itching. A topical antihistamine drop can help.

See your eye doctor: There are subtle differences and similarities between the two. If you have a known exposure to someone who had a cold, flu, or conjunctivitis then it is more likely to be an infection. An eye doctor can look for the particular signs that will help differentiate between the two.
