how can you tell if you have a sinus infection or just bad allergies?

Not easy: Since both may be associated with nasal congestion. Sinus infection however usually involves one side and may be associated with headaches, lightheadedness, and dark green nasal discharge from the involved side. Allergy usually involves both sides of the nose and may be associated with yellow but not dark green discharge.
Itchy eyes is present point to allergy.
