Few things: 1) check online reviews-- do people rave about them? 2) how long have they been practicing? 3) make sure you chose an orthodontist, not a general dentist who practices orthodontics 4) what do other dentists say? Usatopdentists.Com does a survey every year-- see if they are listed.

Homework: Do your homework. Start with every dentist you know and ask who treated their family. Make sure yo use a qualified university trained orthodontic specialist, not a gp who dabbles in occasional tooth straightening--there's a big difference. These are the best professional competence sources. Then there's the beauty contest sources, such as internet rating sites and the layman recommendation.
