Dry socket: This actually occurs infrequently, especially if you follow your dentist's post operative instructions. Most patients can't actually see well enough into the socket to evaluate proper blood clot formation. Rather than seeing it, you will be in severe pain 2-4 days following the extraction. Stop worrying and enjoy your life.

Empty tooth socket: actually, dry looking socket. Instead of a dark blood clot, granulation tissue there will just be whitish bone.
