Have the area evaluated ASAP. Dry sockets are extremely painful in the majority of patients however pain is subjective and varies considerably between patients . Additionally , food impaction may also cause discomfort and adequate oral hygiene with irrigation may be beneficial. Alveolar bone may become infected or inflamed during the first week so have it evauated

Dry sockets tend to occur within the first few days following an extraction. Typical symptoms are new or worsening pain. Also loss of blood clot, visible bone in socket, bad breath or foul odor. Dry sockets occur in about 3-4% of cases. As none of these symptoms were reported and the asker mentioned how scared he was, I was allaying any unwarranted fear. Yes, it would be wise to have it checked by your dentist until healing is complete.
