Multiple steps: First you are anesthetized, then a rubber dam is used to isolate the tooth. The root is accessed through the top of the tooth and cleaned using disinfectants and filing instruments. The root is filled and then the affected tooth structure is built up. The tooth is then shaped for a crown. A model of the tooth is made and you leave with a temporary crown. The final crown is made and then seated.

Multiple visits: First some dentists do the root canal on one step and others in two visits, second the crown takes about two other visits one for the prep. And impression and the other for the placement of the crown on the tooth.
