PT and Quads: In general you will need to do quadriceps exercises. I think the specifics of your problem need to be evaluated and you need to initiate your exercise program with formal pt. Building up the thigh muscle will give stability to your knee . You need to discuss this with your orthopedic surgeon.

Quad and hamstring: Best way to stabilize the knee is with quadriceps and hamstring strengthening. A good exercise for strengthening the quadriceps are leg extensions. A good exercise for strengthening the hamstrings are leg curls. Also, strengthening the hip abductor muscles will help.
