Depends on cause: Methotrexate usually reaches it's peak effect after 3 months of treatment. If after this time you have continued active inflammatory arthritis the dose will usually be increased or additional treatment added. If the cause of your symptoms is prior damage or osteoarthritis it is usually treated with the addition of other measures such as heat, tylenol, (acetaminophen) NSAID ask your doctor for advice re options.

Takes 3-6 months: Takes 3-6 months for full effect, but as long as swelling persists, the arthritis is not sufficiently controlled.
