Doctor Team: Tmj--from data collection to diagnosis to treatment plan, it is a complex process to do it right. Do not try self-care, as you already seem to have symptoms. It is important to have a team of doctors/dentists who have good understanding on what your TMJ issues are, and how to treat it that is best for you. You need no "tricks", just good knowledge on your condition, and careful treatment plan.

See a TMJ/TMD Dr.: Providing tips and tricks for helping tmj/tmd is like filling a tooth without first seeing an x-ray. I would not trust tips from online or other TMJ sufferers unless you have seen a specialist first. Not one case will fit all, and you could make things worse.

A few ideas: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
