I'm wondering how long does a hospital usually keep someone for mental evaluation?

That depends: An individual might be evaluated briefly in an emergency room ; then discharged. Each state has different laws about how long an emergency certification/ involuntary admission can last. It may be extended after a court hearing. Most states I have lived allowed for detention up to 72 hours if there were serious concerns.
