No: Removing an old, failed restoration does not hurt--mostly because you are numb and don't feel anything anyway. What hurts is the decay that may or may not have affected/infected the nerve in the root canal. The longer you delay upgrading the restoration, the higher the likelihood of advanced decay underneath. If strictly for cosmetic upgrade, likely no problem.
