Rare but could: You cannot grind teeth if your tongue is in between. But it is quite possible that you get your tongue caught and hurt when you are aggressively grinding. This would happen more often if you have any missing tooth, as a portion of tongue tends to slip out of position and get in the way. If you are asking this question because of sore tongue, make sure you have it checked, though. Important!

Possibly: Need a thorough history and exam. You may be clenching or grinding the teeth, which can result in possibly biting or injuring your tongue. See a dentist first and then hear what suggestions he/she has. Tongue pain can also come from some vitamin deficiencies or reaction to some meds.
