Not enough: Percussion test may hurt--but not harm--your tooth when performed. Typically, teeth receives 20 - 200 lb force to function. It is not possible to apply such force by this test. However, if the tooth has already had a deterioration such as propagating fractures, it could worsen. If that is the case, a little more biting on something would have caused the same, and needs to be discovered now.

Not really: A percussion test is used as a diagnostic tool to help in the diagnosis. It is often done in conjunction with a cold test, hot test etc. All these various tests along with an x-ray tell the dentist different things which help the dentist to diagnose the condition accurately and recommend appropriate treatment.
