Many Reasons: Gangrene is just one of the many reasons amputations might be warranted. Other inidications are peripheral vascular disease that is resulting in poor limb perfusion (and ultimately gangrene). Infection to the bones or rapid progression of skin infection resulting in loss of the soft tissues. Trauma. Even a few nerve disorders can result in need for limb amputation.
