Fitness: When you are cardiovascularly fit, you tend to have a lower heart rate. Further, when a fit person's heart rate goes up due to exertion, it tends to return to a low rate much faster than the heart of a less fit person. Marathoners, who are very, very fit, can have resting heart rates in the 40s.
