Confusing question: Penicillin would be an appropriate treatment for confirmed strep, but do nothing for the many viruses that infect the tonsils. If a quick test confirmed each episode as strep, sequential treatment that includes a penicillin followed in the last few days with Rifampin can eliminate strep in a carrier. Without more specific data, no specific recommendation can be made.
