Serious.: without an exam, I can only give general information and 1) infection in an under 1 year old is serious and 2) antibiotics frequently fail due to increasing amounts of antibiotic resistance and this is serious.

Hard to say: Tonsilar infections in a 9 mo are rarely simple. They can involve non standard germs which may not respond to simple antibiotics. They can also involve abscess formation within a tonsil or along the back wall of the throat. If you thing the kid is worse after a few days of treatment have him re-evaluated.

Mgt: Prolonged symptoms should be further evaluated. A virtual consult may be helpful. Please monitor his temperature, provide fluids and observe for difficulty breathing. If he has a fever, is dehydrated or having problems breathing, please see the Emergency room. Viral illnesses are not treated with antibiotics.
