# of things: D-dimer is breakdown product of blood clot, and false positive results is seen in trauma, pregnancy, recent surgery, liver problems, malignancy, high rheumatoid factor. Over 50 years, a value of age times 10 may be the abnormal amount. Would tend to repeat test and consult your doctor.

Variation: D dimer is a degradation product of many origins. Small bruises, strenuous activities can cause some lysis of blood or blood products. The diagnosis of blood clot should be by suspicion first and then do the work up to correlate with the possibility. If there are no risk factors then don't even do the work up if there is no remote suspicion as numbers vary.
