Metabolism suffers: Your body works better when it receives high quality nutrition---6-8 fruit and vegetable servings per day, whole grains, lean protein, and some calcium containing foods on a daily basis. Your brain and muscles do better with regular nutrition and your metabolism will slow down (ie you feel sluggish) on the days you don't eat. Overeating on the alternate day is also harmful for many reasons.
