Hot compress: One of the major downside to using ophthalmic ointments is the reduction in vision they cause. I generally recommend my patients take a wet washcloth and microwave it until hot (but no scalding). Then place this over closed eyes for a few minutes. This helps to liquify any ointment on the eyes, which you can then irrigate with lubricating drops.

Patience: Probably clear when ointment is adsorbed.
