Estrogen: Night sweats must be distinguished from other disorders involving sweating. Night sweats are drenching sweats that require changing bedclothes or bedsheets. Postmenopausal women can get hot flashes or night sweats. The cause of hot flashes is unknown. They are thought to be due to thermoregulatory dysfunction involving the hypothalamus by estrogen withdrawal.
