Probably not: At age 86 it is unlikely that you would develop long term complications of diabetes, especially if most of your blood sugars are around 6 mmol/l (108 mg/dl). However, you need to know what your hba1c is, as this is a better indicator of your overall sugar control. If you check your sugar 2 hours after eating sweets, and it is under 9 mmol/l (162 mg/dl), it is not likely to be a problem.
