Shingles vs irritant: It is difficult to say. If persistent and if a rash appears in a specific pattern on only one side, it may be shingles. Occasionally, shingles without rash could occur as well. Other possibilities include transient exposure to an irritant. If it persists, it would be recommended to be seen by a doc as medication can help shorten the duration of shingles.
