Symptoms count: A number is difficult to specify. More important are symptoms that may develop with elevated blood pressure such as a new headache or different headache, sudden muscle weakness or difficulty speaking--these make urgent evaluation necessary. Elevation of blood pressure over about 115/70 is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, but this is over an observation period of years.
