Maybe: It would depend on the cause of the gum recession. A dentist knowledgeable about recession should be able to help you determine the cause of the recession and help you try and find some things to do to prevent further recession. The causes can include grinding and clenching, brushing too hard, or structural deficiencies like teeth located outside of the bone and thin gums.

Not good idea: Depends on the cause. Expanding teeth of of bone support, systemic diseases such as diabetes, parafunctional habits, overly aggressive brushing, gum disease (infected gums), and so many other things can cause recession. If the cause is addressed, the recession can be controlled. Please ask your dentist for a referral to a periodontal specialist.

Not true: "receding gums" is a common problem, and is a result of either abrasion, orthodontic movement, or periodontal disease. Present for examination immediately to your orthodontist, he/she may refer you to a periodontist or a gp for palliative treatment.
