A member asked:

What are the risks and side affects of taking antibiotics for oral infection over prolonged periods of time 2 years or more?

Clindamycin: This generally safe antibiotic is one of the prime agents implicated in augmenting clostridium difficile growth and infection. Cannot imagine the need to take this for 2 years, and would question your dentist about this. Many adults do not tolerate this drug particularly well, with GI side-effects.

Allergic reaction: If you continue to take antibiotics for prolonged periods of time, there is a chance you can become allergic to that medication. Also, it is possible that your body will become immune to the medicine. Antibiotics are used to control bacteria. If you have a prolonged dental infection, your infection needs to be treated not just medicated.

Something is wrong: With this picture! if you are taking antibiotics on your own, you're not solving any problem ; the cause of the dental infections will continue to destroy bone ; teeth. Untreated infections can cause death. (merely taking antibiotics is not treating it). If your dentist is merely prescribing antibiotics for an extended period of time, find another dentist.
