Likely a sprain: Soft tissue injury to the wrist (sprain) can cause localized pain, swelling, and decreased ability to use the wrist normally. X-rays are taken to rule out fracture, and/or a less obvious subluxation or dislocation of juxtaposed bones of the hand and wrist. Sprain-related pain subside rapidly with limitations of use and perhaps immobilization. Persistent pain mandates orthopaedic evaluation.
