No most of the time: Root canal therapy involves removing the vital tissue inside the canals of the root and filling the empty canals with a filling material to seal off the canals in the root. Some root canal filling material can go out the end of the root unintentionally. Sometimes, some of the extruded material that is out the end of the tooth may remain in the extraction site after the tooth is removed.

Possibly: I have seen this happen. The material that is used to fill the canals of a tooth (gutta purcha) can possibly extend beyond the tip (apex) of the root. Gutta pucha is an inert material that is biocompatible and will not harm you if it is left behind. It is very rare that any material will remain after an extraction.

Ideally no.: Once the tooth is extracted all the materials ( fillings, cements etc) should be removed as well.

Probably not: Once a tooth is completely removed, there is usually no dental material remaining. Sometimes, there can be remaining sealer if it was extruded during the original root canal process. Your dentist can xray the area if he feels the need to check.

Extracted tooth: When a tooth is extracted no root canal material is typically left behind. It is removed with the tooth.

No.: When the tooth is extracted all dental material should be removed with the tooth. The rare exception would be if some of the material used to seal the canals is extruded past the tip of the root, or apex, during the root canal but even that is usually removed by curetting the socket following the extraction.

Extraction: When a tooth is extracted, no portion of the tooth should remain in the jaw bone, that includes material.

Maybe: The ideal answer is no. However, older root canals were obturated using a silver point as the filling material can leave some of it behind if it is broken off during the extraction. An x-ray post operative can relieve any fear you have about this. Broken files past the apex can also cause the same issue.

No: The extraction procedure includes removing all diseased and broken down tissue -- hard and soft -- to allow for optimal healing. Therefore no dental material should remain.

Treatment plan: Have the DDS radiograph the socket if you are concerned. More important, have a treatment plan prior to the extraction in reference to how you are going to replace the tooth.
