A 49-year-old member asked:

can i use aspirin as a muscle relaxer?

Dr. David Trettin

Not indicated : Aspirin is probably the oldest anti/inflammatory medicine around; it works well in this regard for some patients.!it's also used as an anti-pyretic to help reduce fever . It has also been used for many other conditions including headaches, 'blood thinning ' etc. It is not, however , a muscle relaxant . Ask your primary care physician about alternatives..

Yes: Rather than doing sit ups or crunches, you go do isometric exercises which won't impinge on the baby or hurt your back. The american college of ob/gyn has a webpage: http://www.Acog.Org/publications/patient_education/bp119.Cfm which outlines safe exercises in pregnancy, as well as times when exercise should be avoided.

Dr. Ruben Nazario
Specializes in Pediatrics
No: Aspirin was used for a long time to reduce fever in children, that is until doctors found an association between the use of Aspirin and reye syndrome. This condition happened in children who had the flu and received Aspirin for the fever. Reye syndrome is a potentially fatal illness that affects the brain and the liver. You should not use Aspirin to reduce your baby's fever.

It may: It depends on the cause of your pain. Heat can be therapeutic since it can increase blood flow, decrease pain, decrease muscle tone. Heat therapy is generally used for chronic conditions, can help reduce muscle spasms. There are contraindications to use of hot baths, ie pregnancy, bleeding disorders, impaired sensation, and others. Be mindful of burns. Discuss with your md re risks/benefits.
