Acute inflammation: By definition, acute inflammation is something which is recent. For example an ankle sprain may cause there to be severe inflammation of the ankle and in the days after the sprain the inflammation would be considered acute. In contrast, if the inflammation of the ankle was due to arthritis and present for many weeks or months then it would be classified as chronic.
