Very common: There are several different types of inguinal hernia repair techniques, and there is also some variation in how a given surgeon does each type. But having any discomfort or sensation of "something is in there" is common and actually expected for the first several weeks. It can last a few months, but usually slowly recedes over time. This includes laparoscopic repairs.
