Cautery: Cautery, or applying extreme heat briefly to a wound has a long history in the medical world as a method to control bleeding. Haven't heard about the cotton method before but doesn't sound like it went too well. Hopefully you have consulted your doctor regarding the 'infection' and are being treated.
