Canker sores: Acute herpetic gingivostomatitis is a viral infection from the herpes simplex virus. Like most viral infections, it is self- limiting and should disappear in 10-14 days. See your dentist or ENT specialist for suggestions on controlling the pain and other symptoms. Avoid spicy foods and apply orabase ointment or orabase with Benzocaine to the sores before meals.

Stomatitis: If this is your first time with cold sores, this initial phase is called primary herpetic gingivostomatits. It is usually accompanied with a low grade fever and will last 10-14 days. I would recommend seeing your dentist for information about this and the chance of recurring cold sores. A prescription for an antiviral medicine could also aid when the tingling begins at the onset of a cold sore.
