As upper chambers of the heart (atria) do not contract effectively and blood tends to clot due to slow flow or stasis in these chambers. With occaissional normal beats or convertion to normal rythm may cause these clots to break loose and block the circulation in the brain. That is why in most cases blood thinners are prescribed.
