Vallate Papilla : Row of bumps on back of tongue containing taste buds. Not related to period. No rx required. However, have your dentist check to make sure we're both referring to the same anatomic structures...Can't really tell without seeing what you're referring to.

Taste buds: Many things can lead ot sorness of the tongue from irritating foods to gerd to sore tjhroats, etc. The small hard spot towards the back of your tongue are the circumvallete papillae and are a variety of taste receptors. These are normal structures. No treatment is needed. Try gargling with warm slat water to see if your tongue feels better.
