Common problem: Not long after the first penicillin became available we started to see staphylococcus that was resistant. Synthetic penicillins (methacillin& others) were developed & we had more resistant germs. Sometimes we can focus treatment by sending a germ to the lab(uti) & testing it against several abx to make sure we only use the one that works. That slows the emergence of new resistant germs.
