A 38-year-old member asked:

teen with finger/finger joint swelling but no trauma happened. what could it be, and what treatment?

It depends.: There many different causes of atraumatic finger swelling. The amount of swelling and duration would help narrow the possibilities. If swelling is significant and doesn't resolve in a reasonable period of time then it becomes very important to seek further medical evaluation. An examination followed by appropriate diagnostic studies (xray, mri, blood work) would be important.

Arthritis medication: There are a number of different classes of medication that might be effective. I would suggest seeing a rheumatologist experienced in seeing pediatric patients for their recommendations.

What could cause joint inflammation/redness without pain?

Dr. John Goldman
Rheumatology 55 years experience
Arthritis : Arthritis would be my first choice. It is inflammation but not always pain. But you can have swelling, and redness without pain. Caution just because it is redness and swelling doesn't mean it is arthritis. This could be seen in allergic reaction, soft tissue inflammation or cellulitis to name a few.

What are some acne treatments for teens besides proactive?

Ones that work: Being a teen is hard enough without acne, and a teen has a right to something that works better than slick-packaged benzoyl peroxide. I start teens on topical Clindamycin with or without retinoic acid, and move to stronger stuff, including a systemic antibiotic, if it fails. For the really hard cases, dermatologist have the big guns. Junior deserves the best. Good luck.
