How many x-rays is it safe to get in a year? (eg 8 ankle + 1 full spine okay?)

Benefits vs. risks: In general the small amount of radiation exposure from medical imaging studies is considerably outweighed by the benefits for the patient. The american college of radiology's 'image wisely' campaign has great information and tools for patients who want to know more about the risks and benefits of particular imaging techniques. Difficult to say.: Ionizing radiation is cumulative. Ct scans have high levels, while an ankle x-ray is probably minimal exposure. The important thing is to wear thyroid and gonad protection and only go for x-rays if it is medically indicated.
