ASAP: It is usually better to keep the socket clean at all times to promote more rapid healing. Sometimes it is not realistic. In those rare times when you cannot do it right away, do it as soon as you can. Do not forget. The longer the food debris is in the socket, the higher the potential for problems, odor, swelling, infection, etc., to occur.

Yes, you can wait: While you are out you can take some water into your mouth and swish it around and in and out of the sockets. Use the syringe when you get home.
