Have been having upper back pain for weeks now. today it went into my neck and all down my right arm into my thumb.

Neck pain: It still could be muscular, coming from on of upper back muscles most likely rhomboid muscle or from inside your neck, see physical therapist in your area, if therapy won't help you need an MRI i consult with pain doctor in your area.

Nerve pain: Neck and back pain with radiation to arm might represent a nerve pain. It can be from either spinal stenosis, or ruptured disc, or nerve impingement ... The treatment depends on the cause of the pain. It might include strengthening exercise, physical therapy, medication, injections ... You should seek help from a pain specialist for evaluation.
