Arthritis: It sounds like osteoarthritis. This has a multi-pronged approach. Weight loss, light resistance exercise, anti-inflammatory meds and surgery are some of the options. With each option you want minimal harm and maximal good. Joint replacement surgery is getting better all the time but should be a last resort. Although not backed by good data, many patients like glucosamine.

Agree w/ Dr Long, lower leg pain is common w/ knee osteoarthritis , esp. @ night. See an ORS and get examined and x - rays obtained. Then a treatment program can be tailored for your arthritis( NSAIDs , Synvisc injections, wt. loss, quad strengthening , etc). Knee replacement surgery can be an excellent option if your OA is severe and not responding to conservative tx.
