Results are numbers: Lab results are just numbers, so a doctor is needed to look at the whole picture of the patient's situation. Gamma-glutamyltransferase (ggt) is an enzyme that occurs in liver cells. If there is a reason to suspect liver disease, then the GGT blood test can be done. If the result is high, damage to liver cells is suspected, but it can be from gallstones, infection, etc..., not just alcohol use.
