Same as an adult: A 16 year old male can usually take most of the same medicines for schizophrenia as an adult depending on his body size and weight. Most antipsychotics will work the same in adolescents as well as adults. The newer second generation atypical antipsychotics have side effects of increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome. It would be good to consult with a child psychiatrist.

The second generation antipsychotics are often used just as they are in an adult. However, specialized physicians including Child Neurology and Psychiatry docs, or a Neurologist certified in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry should oversee the care. At initial consultation and throughout care, all potential side effects and reasons for initiating a drug will be discussed
